Occupation of Japan

The occupation of the Japanese mainland began immediately following Japan’s surrender, with President Truman directing American officials to supervise the terms of the surrender. These included turning Japan into a democratic-style nation and more importantly, facilitating Japanese disarmament. American military forces would occupy the country for the next seven years, until the Treaty of San Francisco took effect in 1952.
