LTG Schultz’s awards include: Combat Infantry Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, Army Distinguished Service Medal Oak with oak leaf cluster, Silver Star Medal, Legion of Merit with bronze oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with two bronze service stars, Vietnam Service Medal with three service stars, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Forces Reserve Medal with gold hourglass device, Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with gold and silver stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Secretary of Defense Award for Outstanding Public Service.

Overview 

LTG Schultz received his commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry; upon graduation from the Iowa Military Academy and was called to active duty as a member of the Iowa National Guard's 2nd Battalion, 133rd Infantry in 1968, He served in Vietnam with the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment in 1969, first as a rifle platoon leader, and later as a scout platoon leader. In 1998, he began his tenure as the longest serving Director of the Army National Guard, where he achieved the rank of three-star general.  Since leaving active duty he has served in a variety of corporate leadership positions in the private sector.

Schultz played a crucial role while leading the team in building the home to the American Soldier, the National Museum of the United States Army as President of the Army Historical Foundation. General Schultz is philanthropic and generous with his time volunteering with Director with Our Military Kids and Senior Associate of the Army Aviation Association of America.  General Schultz served on the DoD 50th Vietnam Commemoration Committee and as a senior military advisor to the Iraq Study Group. The Civil Support Teams in the National Guard today are a product of the Tiger Team that Schultz led in 1997 as part of a Secretary of Defense initiative to better integrate Reserve and Active Components fighting domestic terrorism. He is also a recipient of the Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award and the American Legion Post 405 Ben Franklin Medal. In 2020, he was inducted into the Infantry Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame. LTG Schultz currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Army War College Foundation.  

Schultz is a graduate of the Iowa Military Academy, Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Upper Iowa University and received a Master of Public Administration degree from Shippensburg University. Schultz is a licensed airplane pilot (Commercial and Multi-Engine Land Instrument Rating).
