Navy

The U.S. Navy marks October 13, 1775, as its official birthday.  On that day, the Continental Congress approved a plan for purchasing and outfitting two sailing vessels for the purpose of combat in the American Revolution. Shortly after the war, however, both the Navy and Marines were all but disbanded. In 1798, the U.S. Congress officially created the Department of the Navy. The Navy has taken part in every war in which the United States has been involved. In addition to wartime duties, the Navy is also used in defense of U.S. cargo against piracy. All Navy recruits currently receive basic training at Recruit Training Command on Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. The Navy’s motto is “Honor, Courage, Commitment.”
