The League for the Independence of Vietnam (Việt Nam Độc Lập Đồng Minh Hội), known as the Việt Minh, was formed in 1941 as a coalition of nationalistic Vietnamese groups. Organized in China to oppose the decades long French occupation of Vietnam, the Việt Minh also worked to expel Japanese forces during World War II. The United States and other Allied forces supported and trained the military arm of the Việt Minh to aid in their fight against Japan. At the close of the war, Hồ Chí Minh, the leader of the Việt Minh, led his military forces into the city of Hanoi and declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam an independent country.
