In Vietnamese superstition, an owl’s call is a bad omen signaling to ghosts that someone is about to die. The owl’s hoot lets ghosts know a soul is ready to be eaten. The owl, however, can never share in the feast. The expression, the owl calls the ghost to dinner, is used to describe someone being exploited by others the way the owl is exploited by the ghosts. In this image, Ngo Dinh Diem is the owl being exploited by MAAG (United States Military Assistance Advisory Group) as the ghost coming to feast on the soul of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam).
