Like many other communist factions, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) turned to the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union for support. In Indochina, North Vietnam also allied itself with the communists in Laos (Pathet Laos), Cambodia (Khmer Rouge), and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). However, relations between communist parties and countries deteriorated over the 1950s and 1960s. By 1969, the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China had solidified ideological differences and split the allegiances of different communist factions.
