Soldiers Rest After Making Their Way Inland

The Battle of Luzon was not won with gunfire alone but was aided in large part by engineer regiments across the island. The engineers were fundamental to U.S. progress on the island; creating roads, removing mine fields, and transporting supplies to troops as they moved through the country. With most of General Yamashita’s forces having fled to the mountainous regions to the north prior to the invasion, much of the combat on Luzon focused on dislodging them from their defensive positions.
