B-29s in Flight

1945Photograph

The greatest single loss of life during the war for the Japanese occurred on the night of March 10, 1945 when hundreds of B-29s bombarded the capital with more than 1,500 tons of incendiary bombs. The resulting fires destroyed more than 15 square miles of the city, with estimates of nearly 100,000 Japanese civilians killed and more than a million displaced.
