A typical signal mirror issued in WWII could produce a beam of light equal to a 20 million candlepower searchlight with an effective range of up to 10 miles.
Using the aiming indicator and applying basic geometric principles of light-reflection, a soldier could ensure that the reflected light was directed onto a specific object such as a plane or ship.
