Samuel Gevirtz enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in San Francisco, California on February 23, 1943.
As part of the Marine Detachment, Gevirtz served on USS Bunker Hill as a gunner until it was severely damaged by two kamikaze pilots in May 1945. Gevirtz kept detailed journal entries of his experiences in the Marine Corps.
