Hibbard, a Chicago based sculptor, became known for creating military memorials to honor the Civil War. He added to his military inspired body of work in 1924 when he created this bronze sculpture of Major General Joseph B. Sanborn.
During World War I, Colonel Joseph B. Sanborn led his men to victory at Chipilly Ridge and was awarded multiple medals and high honors. Sanborn retired from the military in 1931 as a Lieutenant General.
