The 132nd Infantry Regimental designation was retired and its lineage became part of the 131st Infantry Regiment. It did not deploy during the Korean War (1950-1953) or Vietnam War (1962-1973).

The redesignated 33rd IBCT served in the War in Afghanistan (2001-) on a one-year assignment, 2008-2009, to the eighth rotation of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix (CJTF Phoenix VIII). The mission had many facets, including, but not limited to:

  • Training Afghan police, military, and secruity forces
  • Humanitarian efforts building schools, repairing roads, and digging wells
  • Design and implementation of the surge
