Christopher Lynch: Machiavelli, the Citizen Soldier, and the Art of War

Professor Christopher Lynch joins us for an examination of famed Italian historian and politician Niccolò Machiavelli's views on war.

Lynch is Associate Professor of Political Science and Great Ideas: Intellectual Foundations of the West at Carthage College. He received his B.A. from St. John’s College in Annapolis and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Committee on Social Thought. He has taught at the University of Chicago, Boston College, the University of Dallas’s Rome Campus, and the Hertog Political Studies Program in Washington, D.C.

His scholarship focuses on war and politics in Western thought with special emphasis on the writings of Niccolò Machiavelli, about which he has published articles in Hebraic Political Studies, History of Political Thought, and Review of Politics. His translation with introduction and notes of Machiavelli’s Art of War was published by the University of Chicago Press, and he is currently completing a book on war in all of Machiavelli’s writings, also for the University of Chicago Press.

He served as Senior Advisor at the US Department of State focusing on UN peacekeeping operations and has participated in seminars and workshops at the Army War College, Naval War College, and National Defense University and has lectured at the Air Force Academy and the National War College.
